Match the key details.

Fixed-force gas struts are supplied at a predetermined force. For a like-for-like replacement, the most useful starting information is the force rating on the existing strut, its fully extended centre-to-centre length and the type of end fittings used.

Check the force

Look for the force rating marked on the body of the existing gas strut. It is normally shown in Newtons (N).

Measure the length

Measure the gas strut fully extended, from the centre of one end fitting to the centre of the other.

Identify the fittings

Match the connection style at each end so the replacement can interface correctly with the existing mounting points.

Measure from centre to centre.

Using a consistent measurement method helps avoid choosing a strut that is too long or too short. Measure the existing unit in its fully extended position and use the centres of the mounting points as your reference.

Extended length

Measure between the centres of the two end fittings rather than measuring the overall tip-to-tip length.

Tip: If the existing strut is still installed, make sure the application is safely supported before removing or measuring components.
